National Audubon Society
 The National Audubon Society is a non-profit environmental organization that began thanks to the wildlife efforts and influence of John James Audubon, a nationally renowned wildlife artist. Audubon first came to St. Augustine in 1834 and was astounded when he saw St. Augustine’s beautiful beaches, pristine natural wilderness and expansive bird habitats. He wandered the Florida peninsula on foot exploring
our region and capturing images of bird species. After Audubon’s death, his wife’s pupil George Bird Grinnell, chose Audubon as the namesake and inspiration for his organization designed to promote and protect bird species and other wildlife throughout the world.
Today, the name Audubon remains important in St. Augustine and to avid bird lovers from all over the world.
