The Lightner Museum

The Lightner Museum is an interesting attraction in St. Augustine FL that houses antiques, mostly of American Victorian influence. The building itself is a St. Augustine attraction because this historic building was once the Hotel Alcazar. The museum occupies three floors of this former hotel that was commissioned by Henry M. Flagler to appeal to wealthy tourists who traveled to St. Augustine on his railroad. In 1946, Chicago publisher Otto C. Lightner purchased the hotel to store his extensive collection of Victoriana. Two years later he opened the Lightner Museum to the public and later donated it to the city of St. Augustine Florida. This once hotel is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

This building is an attraction itself, containing an open palm courtyard with an arched stone bridge leading to a fish pond filled with colorful koi. The hotel’s amenities were truly beyond their time with its own steam room, massage parlor, gymnasium, sulfur baths and the world’s largest indoor swimming pool.
