The Old Jail
If you like learning about the early explorers to North America and the early inhabitants of St. Augustine while visiting the area on your vacation, check out the Old Jail Museum. Built in 1891 by Henry Flagler, the old St. John’s County Jail served the county until 1953 and today is a historical and educational museum that you can walk through and tour.
The Old Jail is one of the few surviving jails that was built in the 1800’s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors to the Old Jail Museum can tour the sheriff’s quarters and see the 72 prison cells housed inside the Old Jail. In addition to the regular prison cells, visitors can tour the maximum security region of the Old Jail and check out the cell that housed the prisoners condemned to death. Several walk through exhibits are found throughout the Old Jail, many of which feature guns and other historic weapons.
The Old Jail Museum at the site of the old St. John’s County Jail is a great historical site to visit on your St. Augustine vacation. This and the many other St. Augustine attractions and things to do are all located close to our gorgeous St. Augustine FL Bed and Breakfast, the Inn on Charlotte.
